My coming out story...

It seems a long ago that I devised a plan to carefully play my cards and present my preferences to my mom. I've been wanting to talk about it ever since. So here it is...

Never have I planned my life, I live everyday as it presents itself to me. Yet, for once I felt the need to structure how this act would be performed. I tried several times to create an ideal conversation. But it somehow refused to appeal to both my instinct and better judgement. Until one day, I read an advertisement for a play. It was not any ordinary commercial play, it was an experimental theatre act written by Chetan
Datar- 'Ek Madhavbaug'.

The play showcased a single actor (actress actually), a mother. Living all by herself, as her grown up sons pursued their careers elsewhere. On one eventful day she receives several blank calls, frightened and frustrated she threatens the caller with dire consequences. The threats finally instigate the caller to speak. The caller accuses her son to be a faggot, and further adds that it is due to him that the caller's son has attempted suicide!
This news shatters the mother out of her wits. She goes through the personal belongings of all her sons. To her shock she finds a pendrive in her youngest son's belongings revealing diary entries of his troubled childhood where he was confused and frightened. He expresses his feelings abundantly; tears flow as fast as words, streaming down the mother's cheeks as she imagines the turmoil her youngest son went through.
The play ends with an enlightened supportive mother who stands by her son's side as they visit her son's partner at the hospital. The partner survives the suicide attempt and they live happily ever after.
An alternative end has also been suggested, wherein the youngest son suicides like his partner who committed suicide due to parental pressure for marriage.

It was a lazy saturday morning that I read the advertisement. I was to meet my three school friends for a dinner followed by a slumber party that night. The play was on sunday, late in the evening.
My mind was already contemplating.
I might not be a long term planner, but the things I do in everyday life, I do them in a very orderly manner.
That night, a part of me wanted to share my anxieties with my friends, the other half was worried sick that I would jinx the situation. I decided to keep mum, my friends did question me. They always know..
I might deceive the world with my one act plays but there are few who always sense my trouble. These three school friends are amongst the people who know me really well, my maternal grandmom who I call 'Ajji'
and my maternal aunt who I call 'Aaii' complete the list.

The next morning as I made my way back home, I chalked my plans.
After the lazy sunday lunch, I told my mum that I had read bout this advertisement in the newspaper for Chetan Datar's play.

A little about Chetan Datar. He is a most prolific playwriter and director. Sadly he passed away a few years ago at a very young age. Chetan was also my mom's childhood friend. Chetan and his brothers often played together with my mum and her friends. She often told me about how he was a quite little kid, but a very sound man indeed! He was younger to her by a few years. The last she saw him was when she had visited our old  abode in South Bombay.
She tells me, "Chetan asked me to join him for a cup of tea at his place. She had to decline, although she wanted to catch up on all those years. But, she had an appointment to keep. Now that I think about it, I too wish to have met him, he has played a major role in my coming out story.. Sigh!

My mom agreed on my plans to go for the play. She knew nothing bout the subject of the play. Dad wasn't at home that sunday, we had dinner quite early and headed for the theatre. We purchased two tickets and took our seats. There were few other people in the audience.
The play began..
and ended...

We stood up, applauded and left the theatre. It was a very strong subject and an essentially intensive drama. Mom was quite on the way back. I started talking bout the various other Indian perso nalities who are supposedlygay.. As we reached home, my sis asked me bout the play. I took her to our room and explained the situation to her. She asked me to sleep beside mom that night and explain everything to her. I gathered
my guts, lying beside my mom, words which are usually my forté had now deserted me.
I asked mom how she found the play. She expressed her liking for the actress and the scraipt. We chatted a little about Chetan Datar.
Once again I gathered a little courage. This time I atleast had the courage to tell my mom that I wanted to
tell her something that was connected to the play. I saw the expression on her face change and I lost my strength once again.
That was it, I couldn't do it anymore. My sister was sleeping on a single bed beside ours. She frantically gestured me to start talking, I gestured back that I couldn't. I was terribly choked up. It felt like
an invisible hand was choking me, denying me my freedom of speech.
Finally my sis got out of her bed and onto ours and told mom that I wanted to say the same things that the youngest son in the play had told his mother!
That was plainly put. My mom got the gist of things.
There were a lot of tears and drama about why I didn't tell her bout this earlier.
Ofcourse, she also asked me about whether I was sure bout this. So then I had to tell her very objectively bout my first relationship with Sreelakshmi. Thankfully, there weren't any pointy questions!
Mom kept asking me though, why I didn't tell her about this earlier. I told her frankly that, I wanted to get a job, put aside some money...create a cushion around me in case things turned ugly, which in some cases they have.

This awesome lady is my mom btw...    :)

Mum rebuked me saying how I could possibly think that she would desert me for this reason! After all her argument was right, she's a mother. Then again I was just taking care of the contingency plan.
I slept in fits of an hour or so as our chat had continued till 4 in the morning.
I was extremely exhausted after all this. I had made my mom a few promises. That I would not go public with this and also not tell it to my dad till she thought that it was the right time.
I told her that if I meet a trustworthy person who asks me, then I shall give a thought to revealing my identity.

That's it... That's my coming out story!
So, alls well that ends well I guess! It's one step ahead in the explorer's quest... The next step is even more exciting, and it involves a venust lady and courting and blushing and the works! :)

Anwesha the Explorer solemnly declares that she is smitten ;) Nay madly in love with...
This is already too long a blogpost, so my fair reader, you shall have to await my next blogpost :)

Showdown with my Sis!

I write, right now as I speak to my sister after a period of 3 days.
Three days ago at around four am in the morning, I came out to her. She was dumbstruck and told me not to be mad, also she mentioned that I must not say things due to outside influence, or cause someone said so. Also she asked me who was my partner and when I replied I hadn't any she again reminded me not to be an ass. After that she went off to sleep asking me to go to sleep too as she had school next morning and I had to go to office. For the next three consecutive days we only looked at each other staring and moving on.
I felt that if she didn't want to come forth and ask me or tell me anything, then I had nothing to say to her either.

Today finally after my friends Smile & the Bollywood chatter box, told me that I was totally being an ass with mad cow disease, that I decided that I must talk to my sister. Upon returning from office, after my sister had, had her dinner, I indicated to her to come to our room. She did. I asked her if she wished to speak to me and after a mutual disagreement over the fact that we were totally being asses, we shared a hearty laugh. She tells me about the farewell they gave to their seniors from standard 10th (She is currently in STD 9)

After a lot of freaking out and calling me- "Are you mad?" for the umpteenth time and saying things like- "What are you gonna tell our dearest parents and what about the rest of the world and just imagine granny's state of mind when she comes to know! I calmly replied, "Yes, each one of them is going to be in one word - SCANDALIZED!" Think about it again, my sister continues with her rants; how will you live alone and who will be there to take care of you, imagine what people will say to our parents. She gives me the example of a maternal cousin who decided to marry an out of the caste guy and she was strongly criticised (but that is because she married a drunk who is a kind of douchebag, all the while thinking that she could save him and all that sorta thing… I wonder sometimes why some girls have this 'go save the guys and they will change after marriage attitude')

I understand that she is apprehensive, she is totally scared shitless. She worries, she frets, she wonders whether I can change!
Finally she gives in and says, I am with you whatever  it is…!
I breathe free, I now have an ally on the home base.

gay forever after, but what next!

I realize that so far I haven't posted many real life diary entries.
I've been mostly bantering around, describing all my miserableness & low down feelings.. Can't really help it, when you don't seem to find any substance in your life anymore. Cause although I have come to terms with my being gay forever after, I don't know what next!

For any hetero-sexual in India, life has been well defined-
You grow up, study hard, pass exams, arm yourself with educational degrees, get a job, search a wife/husband, settle down, get a decent house, create respect for your family in society, procreate, bring up children, get them married off & then retire.

Very well defined.

For a homosexual, it's like being the 1st batch student of a newly introduced syllabus for a board exam and there aren't any reference papers or question banks from the previous years!

No wonder I was always so lost. In fact, I am even today!
Cause although I know what I am & what I want and how exactly to go achieving it...
By far, the greatest question is-
When do I decide that I wanna come out?
How do I say it to my parents?
Do I declare it to the world?
Do I change my nationality? and go reside in some nation which allows my kinda people to exist peacefully, by the way, does such a place even exist?

Or simpler still..
Do I fuck it all and simply die...!

the last option though I have decided not to even think about... is nevertheless most tempting!

Random Rhymes... I Pretend

I dedicate this to you Firebolt and Embers, towards whom I do not have to pretend.

I pretend all the time,
I act, I build a pantomime,
I laugh, I care,
I love, I dare...

Each hour, each day,
I try that I may-
be to this world,
what it expects of me.

Yet, it is nothing more than a bribe,
to which by my own I subscribe.
Yes, it's my own doing,
yes, I've been all along knowing;

that a day shall come...
When I shall deceive none,
for so tired will my soul be..
It'll break into a 1000 pieces of me.

Only then shall I truly know,
how many will remain and
how many more forgo.

How many pairs of hands,
by my side will stand,
to render me into a whole again..
To shoulder my pieces
& be with me through my winters & rain

Till then I shall be a faithful mirror.
Showing 'them' all they want,
without any possible error!

-23rd Jan. 2011.

So yeah! that's me to the rest of the world who doesn't know the true me...
I pretend to be an obedient loving daughter to my parents ( I do truly love them, then again I'm angry they don't realise that there are needs beyond just providing for your children )
I pretend to be a well behaved girl to the rest of my family so that my parents are respected in the family circles!
It's only with my younger cousins that I share my true life philosophies, not the gay ones ofcourse..
I pretend to be a good colleague. Always ready to be made fun of, like a jester to my acquaintances and office colleagues and most college friends, so they're cool with me. (half the times the jokes they crack are so lame, so I take that very topic to another untangible direction & am rewarded with loud guffaws, especially from my friend Smile)

So yeah, that's me in real life, I can put on an act pretty easy, actually that's what I am doing most of my living breathing lifetime!
It  has become second nature to me. The very moment that I am with anyone other than myself, it's like a switch is turned on or off as per the social setup surrounding me! Actually thing was that I feared that the second nature was getting over capricious and that's why I gave my true self a chance before it was murdered completely & no one would even come to know! What a weird idea, but you know what?
 It is true!

Random Rhymes... - I am what I am.

I am what I am
and most certainly it will not do.
But would it not be better if I were to split myself in two!

As confounded it may seem
A dastardly thing to do
What matters ask I
For it isn't to me a thing that’s new

Every living day
Every human hour
I breathe, I think, but I do still act
That it is not me, that is a fact

What think I might
With all my sprite
But thinking is where the buck stops
For I CAN NOT let it, but rot

Inside of me struggling with all its force
I fear it might just make its way out
and take its own course
But what will it find…
acceptance? Never for its kind
in my words is where it will find

as day after day i follow this sham
to split myself, from
what is me, and what I am !

-  17th Dec. 2010.

So yeah, I wrote this sometime ago, before I had decided to live, live for myself. But since then it's been a long time, and I am miserable, I lock myself in my room daily, and try to explore myself, as to what I am?, what exactly I want from life, how it is going to affect my peers. It is horrid, my moods, my thought process that is, seems to be going nowhere, I am more indecisive than I ever could be, if only Sree was with me...

Mom says that I look like I have just emerged out of a grave and that I should tidy myself up. But this time around when I look into myself and try searching for the strength, I just don't find any. Once again my thoughts shift to suicide and, but, no I am certainly not a coward. It's just that at this moment I am not thinking straight... ha ha.. like I ever will!

Yesterday, I came out to an office colleague cum friend, lets call her Smile, that is one attribute in her that is never outdone. She was really all cool about it, but how does it really matter, ok so now one more person knows my true identity. I still wonder how she was able to coax me into saying it, but then I guess I really was in a dark mood since a very long time and couldn't really help it, and yes, I trust her.
In the past there were people who I have told about my true identity, and thought that they might help me evolve, but I guess that just doesn't happen. For a while, they are curious, they ask questions and then I am left to pretty much myself, cause my world is different from their's and well I'm too shy to go find myself a best friend. Although I guess that's exactly what I need now.

Anyways, I am thankful that I have a blog atleast, where I can say all this and more...

Yes, I can...

Two years ago...

My political science professor : No I for one shall not stand by the Gay movement, why, you ask me? Today you shall ask for freedom and equal rights for LGBT and the clause which allows it is - between consenting adults. Tomorrow there might be debates regarding Paedophilic relationships, between consenting adult and child!!!

Me : (realized what she just said and reminded myself to shut my gaping wide open mouth)
But then that is another thing completely, that's least likely to happen, that's not even the central issue!

.... after the lecture ended..

A gay guy friend : Did you read about the gay professor who was murdered?

Me : urrm.. yes..

friend : That's what happens when a gay gets a little to comfortable around homophobes, the world we live in belongs to the enemy, we must live carefully. we must lookout for just the likes of us. After all is said and done, all we have got left is US.

Me : No, that i do not believe, you are trying to tell me that the future is all of this, only!

friend : This is the way things are, you can't change existential nature, you aren't god!

Me : Change is Nature dear! The part that we impact and it starts when we decide.

I have decided...
There is some adventure, some risk in the discovery and defence of the new.
The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations, but the new needs friends, last night I experienced something new.
I for the first time felt the need to think anew, to stop merely existing, so do trees for that matter and yet they are regarded with much more importance nowadays. This feeling has rocked me to the core, shaking me up from the slow silent death that I was presenting to myself as each day passed on.
I have made no secret of my distaste for all things girly, but today I have convinced a homophobe (no thanks to her religious beliefs) to think differently.

There are a lot of ideas and thoughts floating vigorously in my mind, I considered that if I started thinking differently maybe I could change myself, but I guess it ain't working like that... So.. here's to me getting back to my true identity with a vengeance!
